Labour Block Free Bulk Waste Collection

At the November Full Council meeting, Conservative Councillors proposed a motion which would have seen Harrow Council introduce a free bulk waste collection service and improved street cleaning services.

Fly-tipping incidents in Harrow have increased by 63% since 2017. Week after week there are multiple stories in the local media about fly-tips. Residents in South Harrow even went out cleaning up rubbish themselves due to the Council’s failure!

Given that local people are charged a high level of Council Tax by the Labour Council, this is not good enough.

Cllr Anjana Patel, Harrow Conservatives’ spokesperson on environment matters said:

“The cost of clearing up and investigating fly-tipping is very expensive as well as time consuming. We believe a free bulk waste collection service will help residents to do the right thing and dispose of bulky waste items lawfully. Harrow residents pay one of the highest Council Taxes in London, it is about time we showed some value for money in the services we provide.”

Cllr Marilyn Ashton, Deputy Leader of Harrow Conservatives has also called out Labour’s failure to tackle fly-tipping:

“Another month, another spate of fly-tipping incidents in the local press. As always, the Council fails to comment when contacted by local media. Does Labour not think a free bulk waste collection service, like the one proposed by the Conservative group in February and last month, would help tackle fly-tipping as well as giving something back to our residents?”

Despite the fully costed proposals for a free bulk waste collection service and improved street cleaning, Harrow’s Labour Councillors chose to vote down these necessary solutions. Harrow needs a Conservative Council which will prioritise cleaning up our borough and putting residents first.
